Carbon Footprint Data in Preparing for CBAM: From Reporting to Strategy

Carbon Footprint Data in Preparing for CBAM: From Reporting to Strategy
Summarize this article with Artificial Intelligence

Data-Driven CBAM Strategy

The Border Carbon Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) requires companies to radically change the way they collect and manage data. But where to start this process? Is data just a reporting tool or a strategic force? In which format do importers demand data? Let's examine the role of carbon data in CBAM preparation under four critical headings.

1. Where to Start the Preparation Process: Corporate or Product Based?

CBAM is technically a mechanism that focuses on product carbon footprint and requires specific data collection. However, for a company that has never been involved in the process before, starting directly from a detailed and challenging step such as product-based calculations can lead to loss of motivation, difficulty in finding competent human resources and mistakes due to lack of information.

Therefore, it is highly recommended to start the preparation process with Corporate Carbon Footprint (ISO 14064) studies. Why?

  • Putting the System in Place: A corporate footprint study allows you to create a culture of data collection and documentation across the company.
  • Data Integration: In particular, Scope 1 (Direct Emissions) and Scope 2 (Energy Indirect Emissions) data from the corporate footprint calculation can be directly pulled and used in the required fields for CBAM reporting.

Of course, CBAM will take into account different processes on a product-by-product basis, but the foundation laid on the corporate side ensures that the building is solid.

2. It is Not Enough Just to Declare: Strategic Management Imperative

Companies cannot simply report their carbon data as a formality under CBAM and stand aside. No international standard can sustain a mechanism that operates only on a "measure and report" basis.

The main objective here is to first measure, clarify the current situation and then take mitigation actions. If an improvement and mitigation strategy is not developed based on the measurement results, after a while, there is no use in making measurements; this process becomes just an operational workload. Therefore, CBAM compliance requires not only reporting data, but also managing it strategically and setting reduction targets.

3. Why Do Importers Want a "Verified Report"?

When your European customers (importers) ask you for product embedded footprint or corporate footprint data, they don't just want to see an Excel spreadsheet. In order to minimize commercial and legal risks, importers generally prefer reports that have been validated and verified by recognized, competent bodies.

  • Risk Factor: Unvalidated reports carry the risk of data being altered or inaccurate because they are based on statements only.
  • Trust Factor: A verified report means that a competent body has reviewed all the evidence documents, checked the calculation method and verified its accuracy. This builds trust in the commercial relationship.

4. The Cost of Incomplete or Non-Compliant Data: Communication Accidents

In CBAM preparation, the data format is as important as the data itself. Presenting incomplete or incompatible data leads to serious communication and acceptance problems.

CBAM uses a unique communication axis. Therefore, when submitting data, it is necessary to act in accordance with the ready format and expectations of the other party (EU/importer), not "according to our own format". In order for the importer to understand you clearly and to reduce risks, it is best to speak their language, i.e. use their format.

Software such as CimpactPro comes into play at this point, making your company's data compliant with the standard format required by CBAM and preventing communication accidents.
