What is carbon dioxide equivalent?
Carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) is a unit used to compare the greenhouse gas effect of different greenhouse gases. Carbon dioxide is the most common of the greenhouse gases, and the greenhouse gas impact of other greenhouse gases is expressed in terms of carbon dioxide equivalent.
When calculating carbon dioxide equivalent, the greenhouse gas effect of each greenhouse gas is compared to carbon dioxide. For example, methane is 25 times more potent than carbon dioxide. Therefore, 1 ton of methane is equal to 25 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent.
Carbon dioxide equivalent is a standard unit used to measure carbon footprint. When calculating the carbon footprint, the greenhouse gas impact of different greenhouse gases is expressed in terms of carbon dioxide equivalents to calculate the total carbon footprint.
